The short version
- Your resume, profile, and answers stay on your device, in your browser. We don't collect them.
- The only personal detail we hold is the email you sign in with, plus your purchase record.
- Payments are handled by our payment partner — we never see or store your card details.
- We don't sell your data and don't share it for advertising. Ever.
- You review everything. You submit your applications. We never do it for you.
What stays on your device
Your name, contact details, work history, education, skills, saved answers, and any documents you upload are stored in your browser on your own device. You can view, edit, or delete them anytime in Settings, or by removing SideStep. We don't keep a copy.
What we actually collect
Just enough to give you access and support:
- Sign-in email — to unlock your pass and keep it from being shared. We get it from Google when you sign in.
- Purchase record — confirmation that you bought a pass and when it ends. Your card details are handled by our payment partner, Lemon Squeezy, not by us.
- Usage counts — how many times the matching and tailoring features were used on your pass, so we can keep the service fair. Not the content.
- Basic support info — only what you send us when you ask for help. We use no advertising trackers.
How the AI features work
Features like reading your resume to set up your profile, showing how you match a job, and suggesting true additions to your resume work by sending the needed text (like your resume and the job post) through our server to our AI provider, Anthropic, for processing, then returning the result to you. This only runs when you choose to use it. We don't store that text — it passes through to get your result. Anthropic processes it under its own terms and does not use it to train its models.
What we never do
- We don't collect the sensitive answers some applications ask for — race, gender, disability, veteran status, and the like. Those stay on your device.
- We don't sell your personal information.
- We don't share your information for cross-context advertising.
Who helps us run SideStep
We use a few trusted providers, only as needed: our AI provider (Anthropic) for the AI features, our payment partner (Lemon Squeezy) for purchases, Google for sign-in, and our hosting providers (Vercel and Neon) for the website and the small database that holds your pass. We share information with them only to run the service, and we may disclose information if required by law.
Your controls and rights
You control the information on your device directly in SideStep. For anything we hold (your email, purchase record, usage counts), email hello@getsidestep.com to access or delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like GDPR or CCPA/CPRA; we'll honor valid requests as the law requires.
Security, kids, and changes
We use reasonable measures to protect what's under our control, though no system is perfectly secure. SideStep is for adults 18+, and we don't knowingly collect information from children. If we materially change this policy, we'll update the date above.
